Designing a good home page is the first thing that a website owner likes to have. Making of a good and effective home page requires a few guidelines. #1. Easy and Consistent Navigation

The visitors are more comfortable when they feel that this site is easy to use and he/she shall not find difficulty in finding resources he/she wants. Homepage design navigation shall be predictive and consistent. This means, from the moment a visitor lands on homepage, he/she shall be able to predict where information lies on the website and how to get there. The navigation menu shall have a well defined structure, design and layout. The website shall also have a search box to locate the information in your website based on keywords so that the visitor has a direct way of finding information. If the homepage presents itself with keywords cloud, the navigation could be more effective.

#2. Keep it Concise

The homepage is like a map of resources available on your website. So, the content of home page itself shall not be too descriptive but at the same time must be discreet. It shall be focused of what the website is about and its important components. Use of images, symbols, icons, info-graphics, animations, videos, sliders, banners or some interactive UI components can enrich user experience and attract the customer to frequently revisit your website making your homepage effective.

#3. Use Keywords

Collect and figure out the keywords which find resonance with your prospects and visitors. Use those keywords in the text and alternate text of images used on your website. Try to be more specific and remove ambiguity when using keywords. Use them sparingly in the content along with related phrases, synonyms or similar wordings. Do not too much keyword in the homepage content. Keep focus on relevance and stick with guiding your visitors properly.

#4. Use Headings and Sub Headings

Use heading and subheading tags like h1, h2, h3 etc to highlight the main topics and sub topics. This will also allow search engine understand and draw conclusions about your homepage content. This will ultimately allow search engines to place your website in a certain specified category and index them accordingly. If you are not satisfied with the way these tags are laid out, use CSS properties to alter the display style of these tags, but stick with these heading tags.

#5. Layout Professional Design

When I say professional design, it means the website shall present well structured information that helps your business in prominent areas of the website. All such details shall be presented in a manner that is clearly visible and well drawn. The navigation shall by predictive so that they find required information easily. For an example, if your website is a management consulting website, you may expect that your customers or prospects might want statistics in the graphical format than in plain tabular format. So, a good and effective professional design requires you to understand your target visitors and choose a design component carefully so that user engagement can be maximized and engagement could convert into business.

#6. Proof read your copy

On web, content is king and content quality matter a lot. It builds your website as a brand. It emboldens your visitor to revisit your website when they need be. Bad content can tarnish your brand image. Wrong spelling and grammar in content leave worst impact on your visitors. There shall be no spelling or grammatical mistake in your homepage content. It must be easy to read and understand. Not just proof read but also speak loud as if your visitor is reading. Record it and listen back to find anomaly in content and correct then and there.

#7. Focus on Helping Customers

In a business, we build customers and loyalties. He is the one who is going to give you market value. So, the content on your homepage shall be for benefit of your customers. Remember that you are writing for your customers and end goal is conversion.
